There is new trend out there. Well, I guess it isn’t exactly new. Kids have been doing it since forever ago. And by kids I mean teenagers and twenty something’s. To me, they are all kids. Anyway for the most part finding what qualifies as indie clothes is fairly simple. Putting them together the right way to really create an indie look is another thing. There are people out there who throw everything they have on and walk out the door thinking they are totally indie. Well, here are a few things you should definitely have in your wardrobe if you want to give off that indie vibe.
The two most basic things you need in your indie wardrobe are t-shirts and jeans, and lots of them. The more jeans you have the better. Whether they are black, dark denim, or grey make sure you have a few pairs on hand. T-shirts are imperative for an indie look. Solid colors with V-necks or ringer tees are the best choice. They can be layered to create any look you can think of. Babydoll style tanks are also a great look with your indie bottoms. Cardigans and vest add the layered look also. And, as if Kurt Cobain wasn’t rolling over enough in his grave already, flannel is still in. It crosses gender lines and can be worn by anyone trying to go indie.
Shoes are a very important part of any indie wardrobe. Vans are the way to go for an instant cool indie factor. My son loves them even though he is only 11 and definitely not indie. They are comfortable and go with everything. Moccasins are a good choice here as well. Nike makes a shoe called Dunks that are very popular among the indie kids because of the nostalgic factor in their design. And apparently shoes called Sanuks are very popular and a must have if you can get your hands on them. Here is one word of advice. Do not wear Converse All-stars if you want to be taken seriously in the indie world. They are currently too mainstream to be considered cool for indie wear. This is a shame since I have been wearing them since 1978.
Scarves, headbands and messenger bags add a great touch to your indie clothes wardrobe. Always have a pair of sunglasses on hand to add some indie mystery but keep them simple and clean with no embellishments. And it is also key to always be seen with your headphones on. Invest in a nice designer pair since a great design will only add to the awesomeness of your indie outfit.
So, there you have it; your small guide to how to dress indie the right way. Now get out there and put this info to use. It’s never too late to make a statement and one of the easiest ways to do that is with your clothing and style.
